Violent Soho at The Zoo

It's been an eventful year, the lead up to my exhibition was pretty crazy, going through 15 years work was quite an experience, and the exhibition itself was a significant landmark to me, it was a very strange feeling walking into the Powerhouse on opening night and seeing the entire building full of my photos. Apologies to anyone who saw my 'speech' I still have no idea what I said.. Thanks so much to everyone who came and saw the show!

After the show I had every intention of adopting a less is more attitude to shooting, to be a bit more selective, and not let myself get quite as snowed under with hundreds, if not thousands of images to deal with every week. It worked, a bit, though somehow my plan of 2010 being a quieter year still ended up with me shooting 181 bands at 66 shows and 5 festivals at about 20 different venues. Sigh..

In 2010 my work was published in Timeoff, Jmag, Rolling Stone, The Courier Mail, The Australian and Yen Magazine to name a few, The State Library of Queensland now has 8 of my photos in it's permanent collection, as do the 30+ awesome individuals who bought prints from my exhibition so far. I licensed photos to one feature film and one TV series, and shot promotional photos for Texas Tea and Halfway, with my Gin Club, Seja, We All Want To, An Horse and Robert Forster photos getting a decent run through the year too.

This set of 25 photos were hard to chose, I picked an arbitrary number, and  just went with the ones taken in 2010 that I though were successful as photos, most were published somewhere, though a few are personal favourites that never made it to print.

If you're interested in publishing any, or buying prints just email me here? Thanks!

Thanks also of course to all the bands, editors, punters, promoters, venues, publicists, managers and publications that make this weird and wonderful job possible, a fab 2011 to you all. Rock on, and so on.

U2 – 360 – 8th December 2010

That's a 360 degree panorama of the setup for U2's 360 Tour that played in Brisbane at the start of December. Click the photo for a bigger version. I think it was more over the top than the Vertigo stage from the previous tour in 2006:

U2 Stage - Brisbane Australia 7th November 2006

That had the enormo wall of video, but didn't have the awesome all singin all dancing alien battleship thing from this year:

Nuts.

I'm not the worlds hugest U2 fan, and I'm certainly not a music critic, I'll leave that well alone.  U2 have just sort of always been there I suppose, I don't own any of their records, but have seen them three times now, The Rattle and Hum tour, Vertigo and now 360. They certainly don't muck about with the staging and spectacle, the band are obviously great at what they do, and the fans seemed to be having an ace time.

It's always a fun show to shoot, though I was reminded once again how choreographed productions on this scale are, out of necessity I suppose? Not much room for spontaneity amongst all that sequenced machinery.

In another life I worked as production manager on film projects in the UK, organising logistics, budgets, locations and all that, I couldn't help thinking of  the army of roadies, techs and support staff  behind the U2 show, here are a few fun facts*  from The Internet (* may or may not actually be facts).

The 360 Tour - which continues until mid 2011 includes 108 shows on 7 continents and is expected to gross US$750,000,000 all up. The production costs about US$750,000 a day to keep running, box office for an average night is around the US$6,000,000 mark. By the end of 2010 the tour is expected to have sold around five million tickets.

The tour has 3 complete stages, each takes 7-8 days to build and dismantle. Around Europe and The US these 3 stages are leapfrogged around the continent. Each of the 3 stages weighs 220 tons, and supports 170 tons of video screens, lights, audio gear and frikkin lasers.

The production has 137 touring crew and picks up another 150 locally at each venue. It takes 38 trucks to move each of the 3 stages. They have modified several stadiums to fit it all in, as you do, and at some shows in Europe they spoke to the crew of the International Space Station, live. The whole thing is just epic really - the scale of it is totally mind boggling.

Got something similar in mind? StageCo. can probably sort you out.

It's been just over a year now since the end of my exhibition at The Powerhouse, prints have been selling pretty regularly since the show, still,  there are a few framed photos remaining, so I'm having a print sale! I'd love to see them all out in the world.

34 The Arcade Fire 20jan08

Quite a few photos sold multiple times, and some were sold unframed to be sent overseas, the total so far is 32 36 photos sold from an exhibition of 50. Not too shabby. Thanks again to The Brisbane Powerhouse for a great show, and huge thanks to everyone who bought a print, you rule : )

46 The White Stripes 06

The photos in this gallery are all that remains of the framed photos, they are all 30x20 inch prints in classy black frames, behind glass. There's a set of photos of them hanging at The Powerhouse here to give you some idea their size.
