Mark Lanegan – 6th July 2010 – The Zoo
Mark Lanegan played at The Zoo on the 6th of July, very cool show. I've seen him play several times, previously at the Zoo in 2007 with The Twilight Singers and at Splendour 2009 as part of The Gutter Twins, again with Greg Dulli from Afghan Wigs. He played at the Zoo a few years earlier too, with a full band, don't remember the date. Mark Lanegan's always a challenge to shoot, he does like it dim. I used a monopod for these, haven't had to do that in a while..click these photos to see bigger versions.
The low lighting makes perfect sense with the show though, he has a massive voice, and a rare prescence as a performer. People don't chit chat when he sings, that voice just commands your attention.
If you're not familiar with his work you really should become acquainted. Here is as good a place to start as any I guess: http://www.myspace.com/marklanegan Tons of info here too.

Great pics, Stephen. I was at this show and it’s funny you say people don’t chit chat, as I had three people behind me right down the front who did so all the way through Mark’s gig. It was so annoying, because he creates such an emotive vibe – so raw – that the last thing you want is someone’s nasal whine blaring your brain. Aside from the morons, Mark and his guitarist were astoundingly inspiring. Both you and I have seen a lot of bands perform live, and have likely experienced all the bells and whistles possible; sometimes, it’s refreshing to just see a gig that is all about one man’s voice and lyrics.
